It was a busy week at Numana. First, with the introduction of our new program, GROW, focusing on corporate intiatives to help companies foster teamwork AND feed the starving at the same time. (Check out the link to learn more.)
Second, we had a great opportunity to meet with several team members from the Harlem Globetrotters and package food with them as well. We appreciate celebrities who will take the time to join with us in spreading the message of efforts to work against hunger and starvation!
From the Voice of America, word that the United Nations states an official end to the Somalian crisis, but noting that millions of people are still at risk.
This week, the United Nations declared an official end to the famine in southern Somalia. Recent rains, an improved harvest and a major humanitarian aid effort during the past six months helped reduce the threat of starvation….
Rains End Famine in Somalia, but Millions remain at Risk
While the crisis may be at an end in Somalia, Scott Baldauf, of the Christian Science Monitor reports that the next crucial area may be Western Africa.
On Thursday, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter, told reporters in Accra, Ghana that an ongoing drought in Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger is showing signs of spreading to Burkina Faso, Senegal, and northern parts of Nigeria and Cameroon…..
Famine ends in Somalia, as drought looms in West Africa
The Sudan region is embroiled in a political situation that continues to present challenges to food security. From the Global Post, several humanitarian organizations urge Susan Rice (U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations), asking that the U.S. be at the forefront in efforts in that region.
A coalition of human rights groups sent a letter today to Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, urging the U.S. government to lead in delivering much needed food and medicine to vulnerable populations in Sudan’s war-torn South Kordofan and Blue Nile States…..
Coalition urges U.S. to deliver food to hungry
The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) advises that many children are at risk in the Sahel region.
More than 1 million children in the Sahel are at risk of severe malnutrition and urgent action is needed to avert starvation akin to that in Somalia, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned. The agency appealed for $67 million for 8 countries in the region where it said instability fuelled by increasing activities of al-Qaeda and Boko Haram was compounding humanitarian needs. They are Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and the northern regions of Cameroon, Nigeria and Senegal….
One Million Children in Sahel at Risk
In a new study released by Share Our Strengths Cooking Matters, research concludes that poor families are eating at home more, but are challenged with cooking with better nutrition in mind.
