Miss Kansas, Our Newest Partner

Numana and Miss Kansas 2011, Carissa Kelley, are excited to announce a partnership to heighten awareness of local and international hunger issues. The partnership will promote opportunities to impact the world-wide hunger epidemic through food-packaging events.
Miss Kansas will work with Numana by engaging in advocacy and education through speaking at colleges and community events about the need for volunteers to care for the hungry. Her first task will be as a spokesperson for Numana’s SWIPE Initiative, a State Wide Packaging Event coordinated at colleges across the state of Kansas this October. Miss Kansas will make appearances in several communities where the college packaging events will occur. Over 500,000 meals will be packaged by students and community members at events during the weeks surrounding the United Nations designated “World Food Day”, October 16, 2011.
Numana, the international hunger relief organization based in EL Dorado, KS, stages volunteer food-packaging events throughout the country and sends the meals to areas where international food insecurity is greatest. Working with over 135,000 volunteers coast-to-coast, Numana has sent over 22.5 million meals to countries such as Haiti, Colombia, Zambia, Liberia and Mexico.
CEO and Founder, Rick McNary, noted “Carissa brings a fresh perspective and enthusiasm for enacting change in the hunger arena. Her desire to communicate the needs of the hungry and how the average person can make a difference is a relevant message for college students and Kansans of all ages.”
The Miss Kansas Organization is a 12-month operation involving fund-raising, local pageant development, contestant recruitment, community service and a speaking tour. This year, 24 young women competed for the title of Miss Kansas and the opportunity to represent the state in the 2012 Miss America competition. The Miss Kansas Organization makes available more than $2.5 million annually in cash and in-kind scholarships. The state organization operations and the Miss Kansas Pageant are located in Pratt, KS, with local preliminary pageants held throughout the state.
“I’m thrilled by this opportunity to partner with an organization already making significant advances in helping the hungry” said Miss Kansas. “Numana’s mission is a perfect match with my desire to encourage children and adults to be active in their communities and in critical world issues.”
Numana and Miss Kansas look forward to kicking off their work together at the Numana Round Up Benefit, August 27, 4:00 p.m. at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon in Benton, KS. Tickets are available for Numana’s first benefit dinner, concert and auction by purchasing online at numanainc.com/prairierose or by calling 877-452-5445.
