Volunteers Honored Pt. 1

Throughout the week of April 11, National Volunteer Week, Numana honored several volunteers who are extremely dedicated to Numana and saving the starving. Articles and photographs were sent to their local newspapers to thank them for their outstanding work. This week, we will highlight 3 of these special volunteers, with the remaining three following next week.
Carla Bernard, Winfield, KS
Carla was inspired to volunteer with Numana after she saw “the poverty and starvation in Haiti”. Carla said she felt “helpless, because these people have such a great need. When Numana came to Cowley County, it was the perfect way for me to help the Haitian people and those in other countries that are starving.”
Carla’s family includes husband, Bill, also a Numana volunteer, a son and daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. Granddaughter, Kiera, has helped at three Numana events so far! Carla worked in banking for 30 years and is enjoying free time tending to her garden and crafting handmade wire and bead crosses, which she sells and donates the proceeds from to Haiti.
Carolyn Elder, Ottawa, KS
A church mission trip to Jamaica was part of the motivation to volunteer for Carolyn. When she heard the Numana story, she said she “knew this was a way to help many even though I could not go there.” When asked about her favorite volunteer job at Numana, Carolyn could not name just one! “Sharing the story with others as we raised the funds, setting up and helping coordinate the event, and the day of the event” were at the top of her list.
Semi-retired from Dengel & Son Mortuary, Carolyn enjoys time with her three daughters and their families including eight grandchildren! She also volunteers with Midland Hospice, Meals on Wheels and her church. In her spare time, Carolyn enjoys reading, walking, learning to crochet and directing a ministry team, “Hands of Glory,” which shares contemporary Christian music in sign language.
Kelly and Jenni Conrady, Caldwell, KS
The Conradys said they were inspired to volunteer with Numana when they “saw the great things Numana does and continues to do.” Kelly enjoys working in the back filling the bins with product (rice, beans, and soy), running the bins, and loading the finished boxes on pallets. Jenni enjoys working on the packaging floor.
Jenni’s observations from working at Numana packaging events, “It always makes us smile to watch people of all ages come to be the hands and feet of God. The children have a special place in our hearts. Something about children feeding children, with those adorable smiles and big hearts. We have so many pictures of the Numana boxes covered in colors with their love (drawings). It is truly a blessing to watch.”
Kelly and Jenni have been married 5 years and have a beautiful three-year-old son, Zander. Kelly is a CNC machinist at Tect Aerospace and Jenni is a full-time college student who is pursuing majors in Education and Religion Studies. When Kelly and Jenni have spare time they volunteer at their church. Jenni serves on the Mission Committee and is a Children’s Church teacher.
Numana thanks these special volunteers for their tireless energy and passion to save the starving.
